The Wooden Bridge in Tuttlingen | Birk Heilmeyer und Frenzel Architekten

Architects

Birk Heilmeyer und Frenzel Architekten

Location

Tuttlingen, Germany

The Wooden Bridge in Tuttlingen, designed by Birk Heilmeyer und Frenzel Architekten, is a seamless extension of the urban fabric, linking the Rathausgasse with the Danube cycle path and integrating Tuttlingen’s town center with its riverbank landscape. Designed as a deck bridge, it prioritizes openness, avoiding upward-rising structures to preserve unobstructed views of the city and the natural surroundings. The bridge’s sculptural form emerges from a thoughtful interplay of wood, concrete, and steel, each material used with precision to ensure durability and structural integrity. A robust concrete surface protects the wooden core, while steel substructures enable an efficient load transfer, even under extreme flood conditions. The railings, elegantly reduced to their essence, enhance the bridge’s lightness, while the slender steel supports and subtly fanned beam create a refined architectural presence. Beneath, a carefully designed underside enriches the experience of the Danube park, reinforcing the bridge’s role as both an infrastructural link and a civic space that harmonizes with its landscape.
